I doubt if there are many that have not heard of Lawrence of Arabia. His legend lives on in books as well as in the blockbuster movie of the 60s.
What I have found in trying to understand the man himself is that it is an impossible task. Certainly a military genius. Certainly a charismatic man who was able to unite unruly Arab tribes. A man willing to disobey orders from his own government when they did not meet his own criteria. A man who reached the heights of glory and the depths of despair.
Phillip Knightley and Colin Simpson co authored the book The Secret Lives of Lawrence of Arabia and not only do they cover the Arab revolt but also delve into the life of T.E. Lawrence from his troubled youth to his untimely death.
The authors tried to peel away the legend leaving us with a very fascinating read and providing us with actual photographs of the subject as well. Highly recommended.
