This was a fun read for me - and ideal for a Brit married to an American!
The starting point for the narrative is England, 1952. King George VI has just died. The characters around whom the story revolves are 4 US Air Force wives, based, to their disgust, in USAF Drampton, Norfolk, England. They consider this to be 'a hole' and the only way they can survive the cold and the miseries of life there in the early 50s is to stick together and drink - mostly coffee.
They meet up with an Englishwoman named Kath, while watching the King's funeral train go by, and this starts a friendship which forms the main thread of the narrative. The story moves on through four decades; the marriages follow various paths, the children grow up and the women end up in different locations. The friendships survive; and the one between Peggy (the narrator) and Kath is strongest.
I laughed out loud when reading this book; the humour comes in a variety of forms. There is also a bittersweet quality to it.
I highly recommend this book - to readers on both sides of the pond.
